Without giving away too many spoilers, Ookami Kodomo no Ame to Yuki (Wolf Children Ame and Yuki) is about overcoming certain challenges in life: raising children as a single parent; learning to stand on your own two feet but realizing that you sometimes need other people’s help; realizing your true nature and having other people accept you for who you truly are; accepting changes; following your dreams…
Sound vague? That’s because I don’t want to say anything that would give the story away (as if the title isn’t one big clue as to what this anime is about….).
Anyway, Ookami was created by the same animation team that brought us The Girl Who Leapt Through Time (Toki o Kakeru Shojo), which is actually a book by Yasutaka Tsutsui, if you didn’t already know. Like The Girls Who Leapt Through Time, Ookami has beautiful animation, background (the location of parts of Ookami is slightly reminiscent of My Neighbor Totoro), and character design.
Ookami premiered in Paris on June 25, 2012, followed by a premier in Japan the following month. Though it has some funny parts, Ookami is mostly a drama / feel-good, family anime, and though there are some parts which were pretty frustrating, it’s not a very sad or depressing story.
